The match started by rather quick win for Grantham, when Paul Cumbers, playing with White pieces overplayed Keith Morrison who employed Albin's Countergambit. Paul allowed him less than 20 moves!
Two draws were made afterwards by Nigel Birtwistle and Nick Payne.
Claudio Mangione played well, however, in complicated battle he made a mistake which Jim Burnett fully exploited.
The fate of the match was to be decided on the bottom board between Janos Wagenbach (playing Black) and me (Ivan David). King's Indian, fianchetto variation was played in which the positions arising are slightly better for White like in this game. Before time control Janos played in the diagram position a seemingly active move 30...Rc2 which turned to be a mistake.

David-Wagenbach, after 30...Rc2?

He lost the pawn after
31.Rxc2± bxc2 32.Nc3 Rc8 33.Rc1 Bf8 34.Rxc2 Bb4
but the position was still rather drawish if it was played accurately. Janos did not find the correct way of defence, playing
35.Rc1 Nd7?
instead of which he probably should have played
35...Bxc3!? 36.Kf1 (36.bxc3 Nd7 37.Ra1 Ra8 38.Be3 Nb6 39.Kf2 a4 40.Bc1 Ra5 41.Ba3 Rxb5 42.Bb4) 36...Rc7 37.bxc3= with good prospect to make a draw.
He exchanged the Rooks after
36.Na2+- Rxc1+ 37.Nxc1
however, and in the ending Bishop, Knight and Pawns vs Bishop and Knight and Pawns there was no chance to stop the advanced passed b-pawn without material losses.
37...a4 38.Nd3 a3? Perhaps, 38...Be7 was more resilient. 39.bxa3 Bxa3 40.Be1 Be7 41.Ba5 g5 An attempt to complicate the game hoping for some crazy tactics or time trouble. 42.Bc7 Kg6 43.Kf2 h5 44.Kf3 gxf4 45.Nxf4+ Kh6 46.b6 Bc5 47.dxc5 Nxc5

David-Wagenbach, after 47...Nxc5

48.Nd3! Nb7 49.Kf4 Kg6 50.g4 h4 51.Bd6 f6 52.Nc5  and Black finally resigned.

This victory decided the match and Grantham-1 retains the Champion's Title!
